Teacher of the Year: Mrs. Fulgieri Article written by Alexandra Basch
Every year a survey goes out to SPHS staff to vote among the teachers for the title “Teacher of the Year." This year, the staff could not have chosen a worthier person than English 1 Honors teacher Mrs. Fulgieri. Though Mrs. Fulgieri has only been in the education profession for 9 years, she truly has made her mark on her students' lives. About her teaching style, she said, “I try to connect to my students on a personal level and adjust my teaching to their learning style.” Because of her modifications, she has a very high passing rate, with 98% of her students passing her class. The Ohio University graduate makes it her goal to see success in the classroom, as well as outside, because after school she oversees the yearbook club where they “capture the memories and history of high school years that will last a lifetime.” With fifteen years of previous experience as a magazine editor, her presence at Polytech has become even more valuable. SPHS almost missed out on the great opportunity of having Mrs. Fulgieri if she hadn’t been surplussed (moved from one school to another due to District staffing needs) from Heron Creek Middle School. Initially, there wasn’t delight on both sides; Mrs. Fulgieri was not in love with the idea of Polytech (she thought she would have to know a lot of technology), or more importantly, the commute from North Port to Sarasota; however, during her first year she warmed up to the students and staff and eventually came to love the quirks of Polytech. Now, Polytech loves her even more, as evidenced by her receiving the undoubtedly deserved award of our Teacher of the Year.
